10 Grammar Hacks na Dapat Alam ng Mga Adult Learners at OSY

Maraming adult learners at out-of-school youth (OSY) ang nagsasabing nahihirapan sila sa English grammar. Totoo naman, kasi karamihan sa atin natuto ng English sa classroom pero bihira itong gamitin sa araw-araw. Kaya kapag kailangan magsulat ng resume, gumawa ng essay, o magpasa ng requirement sa trabaho o school, biglang nahihirapan.

Ang good news? Hindi mo kailangan maging grammar expert para gumaling. Ang kailangan mo lang ay simple grammar hacks na madaling tandaan at pwedeng gamitin kaagad. Para lang tayong nag-uusap dito. Hindi ito lecture, hindi rin exam. Ang goal ay maging mas confident ka sa English gamit ang 10 hacks na ito.

Hack 1: Subject-Verb Agreement Made Easy

Rule of thumb: kapag singular ang subject, singular din ang verb. Kapag plural ang subject, plural din ang verb.

Halimbawa, mali ang She walk to school every day. Dapat She walks to school every day.

Ganun din kapag nagsusulat ka tungkol sa nanay mo. My mother cook dinner every night ay mali. Ang tama: My mother cooks dinner every night.

Mini Exercise

Sabihin kung alin ang tama:

  1. He (play, plays) basketball every weekend.

  2. The students (is, are) happy.

  3. My friend (like, likes) coffee.

Hack 2: Don’t Forget the Articles (a, an, the)

Ang articles ay maliit na words pero malaki ang epekto.

  • a kapag consonant sound ang kasunod

  • an kapag vowel sound ang kasunod

  • the kapag specific yung tinutukoy

Kung sasabihin mong I bought a bag, ibig sabihin kahit anong bag. Pero kung I bought the bag, ibig sabihin yung specific na bag na alam na nating dalawa.

Kapag nagbebenta ka sa Marketplace, Selling a phone ay pangkalahatan. Pero Selling the phone I told you about ay specific.

Mini Exercise

Piliin ang tamang article:

  1. I need (a, an, the) umbrella.

  2. She is (a, an, the) honest person.

  3. We went to (a, an, the) park near our house.

Hack 3: Avoid Double Negatives

Dalawang negative sa isang sentence = mali. I don’t know nothing ay parang sinasabing alam mo lahat. Ang tama: I don’t know anything.

Ganun din sa I don’t have no money. Ang tama: I don’t have any money.

Kapag tropa mo tinanong kung may load ka, mas tama yung I don’t have any load kaysa I don’t have no load.

Mini Exercise

Alin ang tama?

  1. I don’t have (no, any) questions.

  2. She doesn’t want (nothing, anything).

  3. They don’t need (no, any) help.

Hack 4: Consistency is Key (Past, Present, Future)

Kapag nagsimula ka sa past tense, tapusin mo sa past tense. Hindi pwedeng halo-halo.

Mali: Yesterday, I go to school and studied math.
Tama: Yesterday, I went to school and studied math.

Kung magku-kwento ka ng lakad kagabi: We watched a movie last night and ate pizza. Hindi We watch a movie last night and eat pizza.

Mini Exercise

Ayusin ang tense:

  1. Last week, we (visit) my grandmother and (cook) together.

  2. Tomorrow, I (go) to the market and (buy) fruits.

  3. Every day, he (wake) up early and (exercise).

Hack 5: Pronouns Should Match

Ang pronoun dapat akma sa subject.

Mali: Maria is my friend. He is kind.
Tama: Maria is my friend. She is kind.

Kapag plural: My parents are supportive. They always encourage me. Hindi “he” o “she” kasi dalawa sila.

Mini Exercise

Piliin ang tamang pronoun:

  1. Juan is my classmate. (He, She) is funny.

  2. The teachers are nice. (They, It) are friendly.

  3. My dog is cute. (He, It) is sleeping.

Hack 6: Short Sentences Work Better

Hindi kailangan mahaba ang sentence para magmukhang magaling. Mas okay kung simple at malinaw.

Mahaba: I want to go to the store because I need to buy some rice, and also I think I should get some sugar and eggs while I am at it.
Mas okay: I want to go to the store. I need to buy rice, sugar, and eggs.

Kapag gumagawa ka ng cover letter, mas klaro yung I am applying for this job. I have experience in customer service.

Mini Exercise

Pahatiin sa dalawa:

  1. I am tired because I studied all night and I also cleaned the house.

  2. She is excited to join the contest and she wants to practice more.

Hack 7: Watch Out for Commonly Confused Words

Madalas malito sa small words:

  • your vs. you’re

  • its vs. it’s

  • their vs. there vs. they’re

Tama: You’re my friend.
Mali: Your my friend.

Tama: You’re welcome.
Mali: Your welcome.

Mini Exercise

Punan ng tamang word:

  1. (Your, You’re) late again.

  2. This is (its, it’s) color.

  3. (Their, There, They’re) going to the park.

Hack 8: Add Commas to Breathe

Ang comma parang hinga. Kung wala ito, minsan nag-iiba ang meaning.

Before eating my mother prayed. (parang kinain si nanay)
Before eating, my mother prayed. (mas malinaw)

Kapag email: Dear Sir, I am writing to apply for the position.

Mini Exercise

Lagyan ng comma kung kailangan:

  1. After class we went home.

  2. Yes I will join.

  3. While walking she listened to music.

Hack 9: Plural and Singular Nouns

Kung isa lang, walang “s.” Kung marami, may “s.”

One student, two students.
One box, two boxes.

Kapag naglilista: 3 notebooks, 2 pencils, 1 eraser.

Mini Exercise

Gawing plural:

  1. One apple →

  2. One bus →

  3. One child →

Hack 10: Practice Through Daily Life English

Pinakaimportante ang practice. Kahit simpleng text, caption, o chat, gawing English.

Minsan kasi simpleng bagay lang. Imbes na Gud am techer, gawin mong Good morning, teacher. Imbes na Tank you por today I learn allot, gawin mong Thank you for today. I learned a lot.

Kapag araw-araw mong ginagawa, nagiging natural.

Mini Exercise

Gawin mas maayos:

  1. Tenk u techer

  2. I learn allot today

  3. Gudnyt fren
